The US Army, US Navy, and US Marines have a book of recipes called the Quartermaster’s Cookbook. It’s a small compilation of 2k+ recipes of how to plan for 100 servings of any and everything.
Her epic meal preparation was known for over a decade. This included providing meals for everyone who joined the Gold Country AWANA program every Wednesday evening. This was a compilation of cooking gear, serving materials, and plates, and everything was ready in advance. Then there were the surprising meals that were so wonderful that a buffet restaurant would be jealous.
RECIPES
🥘 1. THE MEAL: Big Flavor, Little Table
I love getting lost at IKEA. Somehow it is exercise that ends at a cafeteria, which may be the finest contradiction ever invented. 😄 Alice and I used to make our monthly trek to IKEA in West Sacramento for a walkabout and Swedish meatballs. We enjoyed them so much that eventually the idea followed us north to Seattle. Our version became part of the Wednesday evening meal in Belltown, prepared ahead and served beneath a canopy to about 75 men. Now we’re doing something different: instead of feeding a crowd, prepare enough for five or six. Five or six people can sit together, learn names, hear stories, and turn supper into fellowship.
🍚 2. THE PREP: Keep It Simple Enough to Share
Start with a big bag of frozen meatballs from Costco, CHEF’STORE, or wherever the meatball migration leads you. Portion out only what your little group needs and roast them on a sheet pan. Alice’s simple gravy used cream of mushroom soup and beef broth made with Better Than Bouillon, giving those humble meatballs a wonderfully rich Swedish-style gravy. Add rice and a spoonful of lingonberry jam on the side and suddenly your folding table has wandered suspiciously close to Scandinavia. 🇸🇪 And yes, Minute Rice works. Trust Mrs. Loos and Chaplain Aaron’s street-cooking department on this one. When cooking for outreach, dependable beats complicated.
📖 3. THE TABLE: One Meal, Three Different Worlds
Now take that same meal to three very different tables. 🎒 With college-age young adults, five or six around a table creates room for questions, friendship, Scripture, and learning together. 🌲 In the park or on the sidewalk, the same five or six becomes more personal: sit down, eat the same food, listen carefully, and allow trust to grow before trying to teach. 🏠 At the Gospel Mission, gather a small group from the larger dining room so nobody becomes merely another plate in the serving line. The food opens the table, but God’s Word gives the table its purpose. Pray, listen, read Scripture together, and let the conversation go where truth is needed. The menu may be Swedish meatballs over rice, but the greater blessing is discovering that someone cared enough to sit down and stay awhile. ❤️📖

HYPERMiling: Smart Ideas to Boost Mileage
HYPERMiling Idea 101: Coast to a red light. That is an obvious. The difference is a couple of seconds and a bunch of gas.
I’ve been doing this wrong for the last week… There is a red light, I’m supposed to put it into NEUTRAL and coast. Going down a hill and into a curve… NEUTRAL again. Going down Grant’s Pass – please use your engine to slow you. (you get the idea.) Be smart, Drive from Coast to Coast.
A friend of mine mentioned that you cannot go into neutral with hybrid cars. For what it’s worth, you cannot also do this with electric cars, motorcycles, or airplanes. This idea is best used on good old-fashioned stick shift trucks, but I use it on my Ram 1500 6-cyl, with a full-sized electrical box truck.
