The Amazing Feather of a Rock Pigeon

Jesus is The Word – John Chapter 1 verses 1-5

This small bird can fly like a great acrobat. We know that it has the ability to fly up, down, side-to-side, and incredible back-flips. It is impressive to watch; but how does the bird’s feather work?

Someone said that a meat eating raptor evolved into the beautiful phoenix, in six steps over time. I ask you to look at this simple feather. You will see that just the feather alone is complex in its mechanical design.

The feather is a bone-like shaft, with bone like veins. Yet, it is very flexible, unlike any bone. It carries a cooling fluid to the ends of the tiny feather “vanes” to keep from the structure drying out. Each feather vane is interconnected with barbs to make a uniform mesh, like an airplane wing. This mesh is adjusted, in a moment, to allow air flow when the wing is pulled up. Then the mesh binds solid when the wing pushes down.

The feather must follow the genetic code of length for its every location, or the bird can never fly. There are about 60 feathers in exact order, overlapping in an exact sequence, and attached to the correct wing. If there is one error, the bird cannot fly.

So I ask you to look at the extremely complex feather that allows the common rock pigeon to maneuver with effortless grace. This was not a 6 step process; this was a complex design by the intelligent designer. The feather was created by the Creator.

Jesus is The Word – John Chapter 1 verses 1-5

Jesus is called The Word from “in the Beginning” in John 1:1, all the way to Revelation 19:13 where the One who sits on the throne has a blood red cloak and His name is “The Word of God.”

Unusual names beg for the question, “What does the name mean?” I am German, so my last name tells what I do or where I was born. The former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and his last name means that his family was a blacksmith. He worked with iron. This is important to describe you and your family and their ability and their history. John 1 verse 1 starts out, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.”

This is more than a job description this is an eternal character and explains the eternal actions of an eternal God. Jesus himself is the person described in John chapter 1 as he calls himself The Word. The book of John was written originally in Greek. The word for, “The Word,” is from the Greek word “logos.” It is a very clear and complete explanation of the character, the person. It is definitive. Because it starts at the beginning of the Bible in Genesis 1:1 in a very similar way and goes all the way through to the end of the Bible, in the book of the Revelation, there is only one person that describes himself like so. Jesus is the One on the throne forever and he calls himself The Word.

Let me pray very quickly, and ask God to explain his words to us. “Dear heavenly Father, thank you for your Scripture that you have given to us. Please help me to explain this short passage in John chapter 1. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

First of all we find that Jesus represents himself as the eternal God. It shows us right there, “In the beginning was the Word.” We see a couple of verses later who this is when it says in John chapter 1 verse 14, “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” This shows that it is talking about Jesus. He is 100% God and yet he chose to live amongst humans in the form of a man 2,000 years ago. In Revelation chapter 22 verse 13, Jesus represents himself as the eternal existence one, when he says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” The writer of Hebrews says this as well in chapter 13 verse 8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever.” You see in that chapter one of John, verse 1 it says, “the same was in the beginning with God.” This is written in Greek by Hebrew men who understood who God is and who Jesus was. He is the same as he has always been. God himself represented his character to Moses in Exodus chapter 3 verse 14, when he calls himself the eternal self-existent one, the “I Am.” Not only the Old Testament, but in John chapter 8 verse 58 Jesus himself said, “Before Abraham was, I Am.” Let me give you one more quote from John chapter 10 verse 30 when Jesus says, “I and my Father are one.”

This would be an impossible thing for any human to accomplish. We cannot be self-created; we were created. We cannot be the original creator of all things, because we are only humans on the earth. Only the Creator himself can claim this. He is the one who came to live with us, die for us, rise again and offers us life. Only he can claim this. This is Jesus, he is the Word.

We see first of all that he is the eternal God. Secondly Jesus is the eternal Creator. Verse 2 of the same passage says, “All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made.” This again is a statement that the only eternal creator can say. I have made a few things; in fact, I built a three-story barn in California. I am proud of that structure. Yet I cannot ever say that all things were made by me. Ephesians chapter 3 verse 9 explains to us that it is Jesus Christ who created all things. Colossians chapter 1 verse 16 says, “For by him (Jesus) were all things created that are in heaven and in Earth visible and invisible…” and it goes on to say, catch this exact phrase, “all things were created by him and for him.” The next verse says, “And by him all things consist.” This powerful statement about Jesus the Christ shows that he made everything; he created everything, and to this second everything is held together by him. It says in verse 17, “by him all things consist.” Jesus makes everything work in the universe around us. Here is the big picture: the stars shine at the word of Christ. Our sun shines because Jesus holds it together. Our Earth, every person in it, every part of my body, every molecule, is held together by Jesus. Jesus is the eternal Creator and the eternal sustainer.

And now for the upside, our blessing from Jesus the Creator, “in him was life and the life was the light of man.” This is chapter 1 verse 4. This is the positive side of being created. God gives everyone life. When I am half asleep early in the morning I do not have much light in my eyes or in my brain. Yet when I have breakfast and I am awake I have what we call “bright eyes.” Light is a very powerful and necessary basic component of our daily life. Without light, we cannot live. In the Bible, in just the second half or the New Testament alone, light is mentioned 73 times. The Old Testament sums it up for us and we understand Psalms 119 verse 105 as it says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Jesus explained who he is and one of his blessings is this imperative light for our existence. He says in John chapter 8 verse 14, “Then spake Jesus unto them, saying, I am the light of the world. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” This is not a simple flashlight or a camping lantern while you walk down a country pathway. No this is the understanding, deep inside your heart, that you have been given by the Creator. This comes with a relationship with that same Creator, with Christ.

It’s easy for you to say, “I get the sunlight and I’m smart on my own.” It’s easy for me to say that. But I find when my heart is not thinking of pure or wholesome things, I go to a dark place in my thinking. Did I just say what everyone does when they do wrong? They go to a dark place in their thoughts. John chapter 3 verse 19 describes the lifestyle of a person who rejects the light of Jesus. He says in this verse, “and this is the condemnation, that light is coming to the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” This is the judgment of a normal life. On my own, my normal life has many bad and dark thoughts. Sure I can come up with good things, even during my bad days. But the best way I can describe a life without Jesus is that there is much darkness in the mind. This is not peaceful.

Let me give you a peaceful solution. We already saw that Jesus is the eternal God and that secondly Jesus is the eternal creator. The best news is that Jesus is the Saviour, the Christ.

In the New Testament the angels announced this at the birth of Jesus, “for unto you is Born this Day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke chapter 2 verse 11. Martha is a Bible character and she had experienced the death of her brother. But with hope she says to Jesus, in John 11:22, “yay lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the son of God which should come into the world.” One of the disciples Peter, said to Jesus in an unusual display of intuitive, spirit-filled understanding when he said, “thou art the Christ the son of the living God.” Matthew chapter 16 verse 16. The writer of many books of the New Testament, the apostle Paul, describes himself in 1st Timothy chapter 1 verse 1 as, “Paul, and Apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of our God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope.”

Well, those are Bible people. Do we know anyone from our country that says anything similar? Yes, our founding fathers regularly said this. In 1796, a founding Father Samuel Adams said, “Confess your sins to God and implore forgiveness through the merits and the mediation of Jesus Christ our Saviour.” One of the signers of the Declaration of the Independence was John Hancock. We know his autograph; it’s that big one in the middle of the declaration, down at the bottom. He said in 1784 that we should “pray all nations the bow to the scepter of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Oh I’ve got one more for you. It was John Jay one of our founding fathers who said in 1833, “pardon of sin… for the sake of Jesus Christ our blessed Lord and Saviour.” It was his goal to acknowledge where forgiveness comes from and who gives this forgiveness.

I hope that this is pretty clear. Jesus has always been self-existent. As the self-existent God and Creator of all things, sustainer of all things, he offers you a free gift. Jesus is part of the trinity that we know as God: God the Father, God the son, God the Holy Spirit. Three in one. The explanation of the Trinity is not an easy thing to understand, so I will stick to these few verses that are right in front of me today, right now, verses 1 through 5. All of this adds up to one clear and obvious question, if the Creator of all things, came and knocked on your door and you opened the door to the Creator, can you imagine how different your understanding of life would be?

Jesus says in John chapter 14 verse 6, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Jesus gives you an offer today he wants to give you a relationship outside of your normal mind, your normal thoughts, and your normal way of being who we are from birth. Because we are in the book of John we will see in John chapter 3 verse 16, that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.” This starts with acknowledging I am not God, I am not the Creator.  From birth my relationship is broken from the one who created me. He cannot have a relationship with me while my heart is in this darkness, called sin. It is my life of bad thinking and then doing wrong. Jesus chose to come to Earth, to live an example, to die on a cruel Roman cross, to raise himself from the dead. Remember he is the Creator, and now he offers you a New Life inside your heart. This new life is a gift for you. May I ask you, “Are you ready to ask for this gift?” It says in the New Testament in Romans chapter 10 verse 9 “that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved.”

Jesus is the Eternal self-existent God. Jesus is the Eternal Creator and Sustainer. Now Jesus offers to be you Eternal Saviour for your heart and life. To accept this is to trust that your Creator loves you and wants a relationship with you. This is a 100% trust in a Father that cares for you and will help you every day.
