This is not an easy book. It records real lives and the weight they bore.
Many of these children were born with disabilities they couldn’t choose; others were altered during their upbringing by violence, neglect, or addiction. Their stories are not meant to evoke sympathy, but to remind us that the value of life does not depend on physical well-being, efficiency, or whether others deem it “worth it.”
We understand that responses to disability vary across countries and cultures. Some emphasize institutions, others rely on families; some choose to hide it, others choose to endure it. But wherever they are, the one who truly bears the responsibility of care is often the one who silently gives love and patience in daily life.
If you are caring for a disabled child, a disabled relative, or have ever done so, please know: what you are experiencing is not being ignored. This book does not attempt to provide simple answers, nor does it easily discuss “meaning.” It simply hopes that, while telling these stories, it will leave room for dignity, compassion, and perseverance. The first chapter presents reality itself—sometimes unsettling, sometimes leaving one speechless. The following chapters will gradually discuss grace, but that grace is neither cheap nor a comfort that denies suffering.

Hubert and Diane Carle were married for forty-five years. They both were involved with ministering to the deaf before they met. After graduating from Sacramento Bible Institute in the early 1980’s, they worked with Biblical Ministries Worldwide for almost 20 years. During that time, they spend 10 years in Los Angles living in an apartment complex set up for meeting the needs of the Deaf-Blind. They went on to minister in a deaf church near Sacramento. Dianne battled cancer for thirty years and the Lord used her sickness to lead many people to Himself. She was taken home to be with the Lord July 13, 2024. Hubert is also a published writer on marriage counseling.
