Thank you to everyone who checked in on me this last week. I am finally better. Also, thank you to those who reached out to share your Thanksgiving plans with me; I enjoyed hearing what you did that day. Are you ready for Christmas? 🎄 The holiday season this year just crept up on me, and I am NOT prepared. Honestly, I am never ready for it; in fact, I don’t really like it (my family calls me the Grinch, and I am okay with it).
I don’t tell many people this, for fear of judgement, but as much as I love the autumn and winter months, I dislike the Christmas season. 😬
Before you start to hate me, let me explain. My family isn’t local, our holidays tend to be small and broken because of my divorces and decisions I have made in my past. I have to share my oldest son with his father during this time, and not just my parents live far, my eldest daughter lives in California. I haven’t seen my mom and stepdad in person since my fourth child was a baby, and now she is 6. I am glad I got to see my dad for Thanksgiving; it was a blessing, but I will miss out on spending another Christmas with him and my step-mom (it’s been many, many years since we had Christmas together). The only family we have in town is my mother-in-law, and she is not the ‘life of the party’ to put it nicely.
So why am I dumping all this on you? Good question…I wasn’t planning on it 🤪 but maybe God has something planned, so here it goes.
The holiday season always reminds me of what I sacrificed when I chose to step away from Christ and those it affected. I get discouraged and I used to let the discouragement cripple me. I was furious with myself for many years because I took away my children’s ability to have the close knit family holiday memories I once had and miss. 😢
I have since asked God to forgive me for being a fool back in my rebellious days, and I realized I need to move forward with my own family and make this time of year something better for my kids; so they don’t have stories like mine of regret or bitterness.
I have come a long way from the extreme Grinch I once was (the one who wouldn’t let my family sing Christmas music or decorate until December 1st- no ifs, ands, or buts). This year, my family was able to decorate before the turkey was even carved for Thanksgiving.
Want to know what my favorite part of this time of year is now? 🤔 I owe it all to my Russian studies🇷🇺
I have learned about the Russian culture through the conversations I get to have online with pen pals I have in Russia. Fun Fact: Russians don’t celebrate Christmas at the same time we do. 🫢
Their Christmas is January 7th, and it’s not as big a deal for them as it is for us. Their big holiday celebration is Новый Год-New Year’s Eve. They start decorating for this holiday in November, just like we do with Christmas; their decor is very similar in style and they even have дед мороз (their version of Santa) и снегурочка (Snow Maiden granddaughter of дед мороз). I think this is so fascinating so I use this time of year to get in the Новый Год spirit ☺️. It helps me enjoy this holiday season just a little more.
Sorry for the long intro, I hope my rambling encouraged you somehow. If you too have holiday struggles, message me, let’s chat about it
