Matthew and Jesus were nice guys until Jesus had to call unrepentance exactly that: Unrepentance. These towns were full of local synagogues or chapels with really nice people; but they were no different than the world around them. John the Baptizer had to call them out for their sin, Jesus had to condemn their sin too. Most of the problem was not found in the rough unbelieving Ninevehs of their day. The real problem was found in those Pretty Little Unrepentant Cities with God’s people living like the world, the world who needed the Light of the Gospel.
